Sync cloud storage , December 2024 review

Sync was founded in 2011 [1] making it a mid-term arrival to the cloud storage market (i.e. Sync is not among the earliest providers, but it's also far from the newest batch). Sync is based in Canada (Toronto) making it one of the many file cloud storage companies operating outside U.S jurisdiction.

Sync offers a free personal account and two paid personal accounts for $4.08 (USD) and $8 (USD) a month, with the difference being storage amounts -- note billing in only done anually at $49 (USD) and $96 (USD) per year. In addition, Sync also offers two business accounts for $5 (USD) and $8 (USD) per user with a minimum two users, with the difference being storage amounts -- note billing is also done anually at $120 (USD)[2 user min.] and $192 (USD)[2 user min.] per year.

Sync Storage

Sync offers three different storage tiers each corresponding to their three different types of accounts: Basic (free), Pro and Business.

  • Starter (free).- 5 Giga Bytes (GB). More space available by inviting friends (e.g. 1 GB per friend) and an additional 1 GB is awarded after performing other actions (e.g. Completing profile) [*][*]. Requires upgrading to Personal or Business to get more space.
  • Personal.- 500 GB or 2 Tera Bytes (TB). Requires upgrading to Business to get more space.
  • Business.- 2 TB or 4 TB which includes 2 user minimum. To get more space you can add more users to add 1 TB or 2 TB per user (depending on plan).

The 5 GB storage for a Sync Starter (free) account is a fair amount considering other free plans from the competition (e.g. Dropbox offers a 2 GB free plan & Mega offers a 50 GB free plan). You can also get additional free storage with a Sync Starter account at a generous rate, for each friend you invite you can get an additional 1 GB (compared to Dropbox which gives you 500 MB per friend). Keep in mind that even though Sync makes no public statement on the amount of friends you can refer to get free storage, don't be surprised if this isn't unlimited (e.g. Dropbox limits free space gained by friends after 30+ friends).

Sync's paid storage capacity is priced in the $4 (USD) to $8.16 (USD) per month per TB for personal accounts and $4 (USD) to $5 (USD) per user per month per TB for business accounts. This makes Sync one of the most competitive file cloud storage provider on a per unit amount of raw storage. The only caveat of Sync's storage is it must be purchased anually, but even compared to other paid up-front yearly plans it beats the competition hands down in this area.

In summary, for free Sync gives you between 5 GB and potentially unlimited* amount of file cloud storage, the latter with a lot of marketing effort toward your friends & family. If you're willing to pay, Sync sells you a personal account with 500 GB for $49 (USD) a year or 2 TB for $96 (USD) a year. If you want more storage it sells you a business account with 2 TB for $120 (USD) a year [includes 2 users, additional users cost $60 (USD) with 1 TB of added storage] or 4 TB for $192 [includes 2 users, additional users cost $96 (USD) with 2 TB of added storage]. If you don't mind paying the yearly up-front cost, Sync offers the most competitive pricing of all providers for per unit of raw storage.

Sync bandwidth and requests

Bandwidth is one of the features that really sets Sync apart from the competition because it doesn't cap bandwidth usage. The majority of file cloud storage providers and this includes paid plans, establish daily bandwidth limits or bandwidth quotas, so that once these limits are reached an account's files become unreachable until you either purchase more bandwidth or the next bandwidth cycle kicks in (e.g. every 24 hours).

By default, Sync just sets bandwidth for both upload and download speed to 5 MB/s with no monthly limit, albeit the former can be adjusted [*]

If you expect high bandwidth usage, Sync's uncapped bandwidth can be a major win because it keeps a file's availability intact which can be a real pain point with other cloud storage providers.
